Film and television have been honing their style to tell true stories of one of the scourges of today's world: pedophilia. The prosecution has just the right measures to reflect the impact of the news of an entire child pornography ring in a small German town in the 1990s.
The approach is reminiscent of The Hunt, an immense film by Thomas Vinterberg starring Mads Mikkelsen. In both cases, the creators decide to tell from a certain distance, showing special interest in the psychological aspects of the victims and the accused. The prosecution stars a lawyer with both prestige and sadness in his eyes. Peter Kurth(Criminal, Around the Corner) combines Bogart's melancholy with Wallander's pessimistic intuition. From this point of view, the viewer has an ironic look that oxygenates a terrifying story.
The series has 7 chapters of just 25-30 minutes, with an intense but serene rhythm. The director is the 39-year-old Austrian Daniel Prochaska, who until now had made minor films for television. In this series he shows personality in an editing that combines beautifully shot aerial shots with close-ups of the actors. It is a very suggestive way of showing the vastness and claustrophobia of the story.
The screenplay is signed by the German Ferdinan von Schirach, who had already written a film about a media trial in Germany: The Collini Case (Marco Kreuzpaintner, 2019). It is a libretto that controls the timing and ellipsis to suggest without imposing from the morbid.
