CRITICS Good Mothers

Jan 12, 2024 | Series Reviews

In 2019 the octogenarian Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio released one of his best films. The Traitor told the story of Tommasso Buscetta, a man who ended up collaborating with the police to dismantle the Sicilian mafia. The Good Mothers follows the same itinerary by developing the story of the wives of Calabrian mafiosi who followed his example.
Among the directors of the series is one of the directors of The Crown, the British Julian Jarrold, who imprints a very elegant aesthetic to the planning and production design. The script is also admirable in the sensitivity with which it delves into lives marked by violence and crime. The lives of these women do not shriek their pain and loneliness, but rather suggest it through silence and gaze.
The pace of the series also suits the intimate portrayal of the protagonists, both the detectives and judges as well as the wives of the gangsters. Evidently, the casting of the series has been fundamental for this character development, composed of excellent Italian actresses such as Gaia Girace(La amiga estupenda), Barbara Chichiarrelli(Suburra) or Valentina Belle(The Medici).
The footage of each of the 6 chapters is perfectly adjusted to the story, leaving space for each character, and allowing the plot not to become a soulless investigation of constant and accelerated twists and turns.
